Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron indicated a substantial increase in defence expenditure by saying, ‘Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, France has become a war economy. The situation could continue in France for the next many years.’ The French President has issued instructions that taking into account the significant changes in the geopolitical equations of the world, the French defence forces should be ready with the plans for additional defence expenditure. The current defence expenditure of France is pegged at USD 43 billion, and it is likely to reach USD 52 billion by 2025.

The French President warned, ‘France has not waited for changes in policies on the international level to make huge investments in the defence sector. But the Russia-Ukraine war has necessitated rapid steps and an increase in strength. If anyone doubts the French decision regarding the defence sector, they should look at Ukraine. Ukrainian soldiers are demanding good weapons from foreign countries. They expect the European countries to respond and supply weapons. One should take proper cognisance of this.’

As per a report in the French daily ‘Le Monde’, French agency DGA, part of the French defence department, has prepared to present a new bill. The bill envisages the use of civilian companies and factors required in the civilian industry for manufacturing weapons.
