Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron indicated a substantial increase in defence expenditure by saying, ‘Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, France has become a war economy. The situation could continue in France for the next many years.’ The French President has issued instructions that taking into account the significant changes in the geopolitical equations of the world, the French defence forces should be ready with the plans for additional defence expenditure. The current defence expenditure of France is pegged at USD 43 billion, and it is likely to reach USD 52 billion by 2025.

French President Macron justified the increase in the defence expenditure by saying, ‘The mistakes committed in the past have to be avoided while moving ahead. Depending on other countries for defence equipment supplies is not an ideal situation. Europe should build a strong and ambitious defence industry. Otherwise, Europe will have to depend on other countries in the future.’

The French President warned, ‘France has not waited for changes in policies on the international level to make huge investments in the defence sector. But the Russia-Ukraine war has necessitated rapid steps and an increase in strength. If anyone doubts the French decision regarding the defence sector, they should look at Ukraine. Ukrainian soldiers are demanding good weapons from foreign countries. They expect the European countries to respond and supply weapons. One should take proper cognisance of this.’

As per a report in the French daily ‘Le Monde’, French agency DGA, part of the French defence department, has prepared to present a new bill. The bill envisages the use of civilian companies and factors required in the civilian industry for manufacturing weapons. French President Macron has stressed an increase in defence expenditure since he became the President. Many leading countries in the world have signed defence agreements with France. At the same time, France has also taken the initiative for independent defence forces and industry in the European Union. Ambitious plans also have been drawn up in collaboration with countries like Germany and Italy.

Before France, Germany announced significant changes to the defence policy. Germany has made a provision of 100 billion Euros for defence expenditure and has approved a proposal to transform the face of the defence industry in the next few years. These include advanced missiles, tanks, armed vehicles, the latest technology, and advanced fighter jets.
