Food being used as weapon in the Russia-Ukraine war, accuses WFP Chief

Rome/Moscow/Kyiv: David Beasley, Executive Director of the World Food Program (WFP), accused that food is being used as a weapon in the Russia-Ukraine war. Beasley made this statement while answering a question asked to him during a program on a US news channel. He said that it is not possible to streamline the food supply in Ukraine in the current scenario. The German Agriculture Minister speaking the same language, said that Russia is destroying the agriculture system and supply chain in Ukraine. The German Agriculture Minister also appealed that if these losses incurred because of the Russian attacks are to be stopped, supply more and more weapons to Ukraine.

Thousands of locations in Ukraine have been attacked during this action, and Ukraine is said to have suffered huge losses in these attacks. Russia and Ukraine are known as the breadbasket of the world. But the food grain supplies from both these countries have been disrupted by the war. Many crops and thousands of acres of agricultural land have been destroyed. The local agencies informed that agriculture is not possible in this and the following year in many parts of Ukraine.

Against this background, the statements made by the chief of WFP and the German Agriculture Minister become significant. Beasley, the Chief of WFP, was questioned regarding the Russian attacks during a US news channel CBS program. German Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir accused that the Russian attack on Ukraine was an attack on the international community. While making this criticism, he also accused Russia is consciously attacking the agricultural land and systems linked to agriculture. Özdemir also demanded that if the food shortage arising out of the Russia-Ukraine war is to be avoided, supply Ukraine with more and more weapons.
