The refugee exodus from Ukraine is the biggest crisis in Europe since the second world war: United Nations  

biggest crisis in EuropeKyiv/Brussels – Filippo Grandi, chief of the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), warned ‘1.5 million refugees from Ukraine have entered European countries, in the first ten days of the Russia-Ukraine war. This influx is the biggest crisis in Europe since the second world war.’ Russian attacks on Ukraine are continuing and there are indications that more than 200,000 Ukrainians will leave the country in the next few days.

The intensity of the Russian attacks has increased by the day and the Ukrainian citizens are frantically trying to flee the country. Citizens are trying to escape from the main cities like Kharkiv, Mariupol, Odesa, along with the capital city Kyiv. The Ukrainian citizens travel in cars, trains and even on foot to reach the European countries.   

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had appealed to the population to prepare for a fight against Russia. Preparations are being made to stop Russia from arming many common citizens. But the Ukrainian population seems to be fleeing the country, fearing the decisive Russian action. There are biggest crisis in Europeserpentine queues of Ukrainian citizens on the borders of Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Moldova. The Polish agencies informed that more than 1 million Ukrainians have taken refuge in Poland alone.   

Along with these countries, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany have started receiving Ukrainian immigrants. There is no estimate of how many people will flee Ukraine, but the US and European officials have predicted an exodus of nearly 5 million people. More than 1.5 million immigrants entered Europe from the Middle East in the last decade. The European countries are still reeling under grave economic and social effects of this immigrant influx. Against this background, the warning issued by the UNHCR chief becomes significant.
