Energy crisis and inflation in Germany could be used for subversive activit

Berlin: Germany’s internal state security minister Herbert Reul made a statement to warn that the current energy crisis and soaring inflation could be used to propagate conspiracy theories and carry out subversive activities. He is the internal security minister of North Rhine-Westphalia state, Germany’s largest economy and most populous state. A few days back, the intelligence services of Germany warned of growing discontent and widespread anarchy.

Due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, fuel prices in Germany have skyrocketed. The electricity supply is limited. Since Russia has reduced its gas supply, Germany could run out of gas reserves in winter. Anticipating the challenges, the energy and fuel supply has been rationed. This has caused severe discontent amongst the industrial sector and the public. Senior officials and analysts are warning of serious resentment soon. Herbert Reul’s statement seems to be in the same tone.

Herbert Reul pointed out that the energy crisis and inflation can be used to propagate conspiracy theories on the internet and social media to set a narrative to gain support. Coronavirus pandemic and lockdown are no longer relevant issues. However, new problems are cropping up to instil fear.

Herbert Reul drew the attention of German authorities to keep vigil about the anti-national forces apart from the protesters. Due to the Russia- Ukraine conflict, almost all the European countries, including Germany, are facing the consequences of sanctions imposed on Russia. As Germany is a leading economy in Europe, any event in Germany impacts Europe. Hence the warning issued by German authorities is quite significant.

Industrial organisations in Germany have highlighted they will be hit hard due to reduced energy supply from Russia. Institute for Employment Research (IAB), a study group in Germany, has mentioned in its report that the unemployment rate will increase in the next three to four years. On the other hand, there is a growing influence of aggressive ideological groups in Germany. Considering these factors, the statements of intelligence agencies and internal security ministers are important for Germany and European countries.
