Countries boycotting Winter Olympics will have to pay a dear price, threatens China

Beijing: – China has threatened that the United States and other countries boycotting the Winter Olympics will have to pay a dear price to be organised in China in the next year. On Monday, US President Joe Biden announced a decision to impose a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics to be held in China. After that, Canada and the United Kingdom also announced a diplomatic boycott of the winter Olympics. China, which had said that it does not care for this boycott, now seems to have adopted an aggressive stand and has started threatening these countries.

Since the last two years, western countries have adopted an aggressive stance on the issues of human rights violations in China. The United States and its allies have started making a lot of noise over issues like Hongkong, Tibet, Taiwan, the South China Sea, and the Uyghurs in Xinjiang province. The issue of atrocities against the Uyghurs came on the anvil on the international level after the United States termed it genocide. The demand for a boycott of the Winter Olympics to be held in China in 2022 has emerged from the same sentiment.

Lawmakers and voluntary organisations from various countries had started mounting pressures on their countries’ governments for this purpose. Following the US announcement of a diplomatic ban, Canada, the United States and Australia also followed suit by announcing a diplomatic ban. All these four countries, including the United States, have clarified that sportspersons from these countries will not participate in the winter Olympics. After the diplomatic ban was announced, China took a stand that it does not heed this.

But the Chinese stand seems to have changed following the successive announcements by these four countries. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin warned ‘The United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom are using the platform like the Olympics for political purposes. This issue isolates them from the rest of the world and these countries will have to pay a dear price for their misdeeds.’
