The danger of drone attacks has increased significantly. In the year 2021, there was a drone attack on the Air Force base in Jammu. Former army officers had then warned that the attack on the Air Force base meant a declaration of war. After that attack, the security forces started taking concrete steps towards eliminating the possibility of drone attacks.

A radius of three kilometres from the Air Force base has been declared a ‘no drone zone’. Besides, drone operators in the surrounding areas have also been informed to follow the government directive.

In the last three years, the incidents of drone sightings on the border have increased significantly. In the year 2022, 200 incidents of drone sightings were recorded on the border. More than 500 such incidents have been recorded in the border areas of Punjab this year alone. Out of the total incidents of drone sightings in border areas, 75 cases have been registered on the border of Punjab. Apart from this, 15 per cent of cases have been reported in Jammu and Rajasthan, and 10 per cent of incidents have been reported in Gujarat.

Drones are now being used extensively to smuggle drugs, weapons, money and explosives from Pakistan to India. Since the prices of drones are very low and easily available, Commodore Yadav said drones are now being used more for smuggling on the other side of the border.

Until now, flying drones have been under human control. But now, due to Artificial Intelligence (AI), the ability to make important decisions while flying has increased. For some time now, success has been achieved in shooting down many drones that were flying from Pakistan and infiltrating the border. However, the Air Force officer underlined the need for accurate time and location information.
