Cargo vessel with radioactive material transiting from Pakistan to China seized in Gujarat by Customs & DRI

Delhi – Indian agencies have seized containers of harmful substances transiting from Pakistan to China under the pretext of carrying non-hazardous material. The cargo vessels contained radioactive material. Last year in March, a consignment from China to Pakistan was seized by Indian authorities near Kandla port in Gujarat, which contained parts used for building long-range missiles and nuclear weapons. India had confiscated the contents and blamed China for violating international laws. Later in September, the case was taken up by NIA for investigation. Once again, India has busted the blatant abuse of international law by Pakistan and China by intercepting the vessel carrying illegal contents.

The ship was permitted to pass through the Indian waters as the cargo was declared non-hazardous. However, when the Indian authorities found out about the contents of the cargo, it was intercepted and seized.

The seized containers are at Mundra Port. The contents of the cargo are identified as Hazardous class 7 type, which categorises radioactive material. The vessel had departed from Karachi, Pakistan, to its destination in Shanghai, China. Indian authorities conducted an operation and intercepted the vessel. The ship was not scheduled to dock at Mundra Port, as confirmed by officials of Adani Ports. The officials also praised the efforts of Customs officers and DRI authorities to ensure India’s security and assured full support to the agencies in future.

Two months ago, a consignment of 3000 kg of heroin worth 21000 cores of its market value were seized in Mundra Port. A company in Andhra Pradesh had ordered the narcotics from Afghanistan via a port in Iran under the disguise of ordering talcum powder. DRI conducted this operation as well. Last year in March, a Chinese vessel Dai Kai Yun en route to Pakistan was intercepted by Indian agencies and found a cargo, which contained parts to build nuclear weapons. On confirmation from the DRI, the contents were confiscated. China had clarified that the parts sent in the cargo were meant for industrial use and had not violated any international law. However, many doubts were raised looking at the mellow response from China. India had exposed China’s violation of international law in March. Besides, the operation on Friday uncovered illegal trade between Pakistan and China.
