Permanent Commission for women in Indian Army approved

New Delhi: The defence ministry approved the proposal for Permanent Commission for women in the Indian Army on Thursday. The union government has issued a notification in this respect and women can take up a permanent commission in all the ten departments of the Army.

The demand for Permanent Commission for women was being made for the last many years. Only a few months ago, the Supreme Court of India had issued orders during the hearing of a petition regarding the Permanent Commission for women in the Indian Army. Against this background, the defence ministry approved the Permanent Commission for women in the Indian Army and issued the notification.   

According to the notification, women can get a permanent commission in the Advocate General, Army Education Corps, Army Air Defence, Signals, Engineers, Army Aviation, as Electronics and Mechanical Engineers, Army Service Corps, Army Ordnance Corps and Intelligence Corps of the Indian military. Meanwhile, the participation of women in the Indian defence services is minuscule. Leaving aside the medical sector, the percentage of women officers in defence forces in the Army is 3.89%, 6.7% in the Navy and 12.38% in the Airforce.
