Will not accept Taiwan becoming the next Hongkong, warns US Senator Dan Sullivan

Washington/Beijing: – ‘The whole world has witnessed how freedom of expression, rule of law and democratic systems disappeared, ever since the Chinese Communist regime took over Hongkong. But don’t be under the illusion that you can do something following the example of Hongkong. In the case of Taiwan, a repeat of Hongkong will not be accepted.’ warned senior US Senator Dan Sullivan. US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin has also assured that the United States will do everything possible to ensure Taiwanese security.

In the first four days of this month, about 150 Chinese planes intruded into the Taiwanese Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ). In addition to the infiltration of fighter jets, China has reportedly begun exercises in various parts of the country to invade Taiwan, with an increase in deployments. With this the tensions between China and Taiwan have peaked, with many analysts and experts expressing concerns that the conflict could be sparked. Many countries, including the United States, Japan and Australia, have also started issuing stern warnings to China over the Taiwan issue.

US President Joe Biden recently claimed that the United States is committed to Taiwanese security. This was followed by a warning from Senator Dan Sullivan, who appeared to be sending a message to China on the issue.

As Sullivan is a member of the Armed Services Committee of the US Congress, his statement has attracted attention. In a statement, the Republican senator compared Taiwan to “West Berlin” during the Cold War.

‘If China and Taiwan are to unite, it must be done peacefully. This is what the law and the rules say. Everyone should understand that Taiwan is not just another security post in the Pacific. Just like West Berlin during the Cold War, Taiwan is the front for independence, warned Senator Sullivan. Sullivan also warned that any attempt to determine Taiwan‘s future in any way other than a peaceful one would be a threat to US security, including the Pacific, and that the United States would respond to that threat.

US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin said that although the United States believes in the “one-China policy”, it will provide all possible assistance for Taiwanese security. But opposition leaders have criticized that the softening stance of the Biden administration regarding China is a threat to Taiwan. Opposition groups are pointing out that China has intensified its actions against Taiwan only after President Biden came to power. This has made the Biden administration’s stance on Taiwan an important issue in US domestic politics. Due to this pressure, the Biden administration seems to started warning China over the Taiwan issue.
