For the last few years, the white papers released by the Japanese defence ministry have been stressing on increasing defence preparedness. Japan has adopted the policy to increase its level of defence preparedness for the security of the Senkaku Islands, over which China has been claiming its rights. China has repeatedly registered its objection on this issue. Therefore, all eyes were focused on the white paper released by the Japanese defence ministry this year.

The white paper approved by Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga was published on Tuesday. The Japanese defence ministry has highlighted the issues of US-China economic and trade conflict, the tension in the South China Sea and Taiwanese security. The Japanese white paper has mentioned the intrusion by Chinese aircraft into the Taiwanese airspace.

The white paper has also expressed a concern that the increasing Chinese military might and the military imbalance between the United States and China are directly affecting the peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific sector. At the same time, the report also notes a need to monitor the military activities of the United States and China in the South China Sea and Taiwanese sectors. Japan clarified once again that the Taiwanese security is linked to its security, saying, ‘The Chinese activities posing a challenge to the Taiwanese security are dangerous. Peace and stability in the Taiwan sector are equally crucial for Japanese security and international stability. Only last week, Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso had warned that if Taiwan comes under an attack in the coming times, it will create a direct threat to Japanese security. Taro announced that, therefore, Japan would also enter the war against China with the United States.
