Analysts appeal to the United States to prioritise the issue of Taiwan instead of Ukraine

Washington/Taipei: – The Biden administration in the United States should pay more attention to the security of Taiwan instead of the current situation in Ukraine. This appeal has been made in an article published in the leading US daily ‘Wall Street Journal’.

The article advises that it is more important to stop China from acquiring the capability to dominate the Asian continent than pay attention to the developments in Europe. Last month itself, Former US National Security Advisor Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg had raised a question ’Why is the Biden administration wasting its time and resources on Ukraine instead of countering the real threat posed by China?’

An article titled ‘Ukraine is Distraction from Taiwan’ was published in the leading US daily ‘Wall Street Journal’. Elbridge Colby, former Deputy Assistant Secretary in the US Defence Department and Oriana Mastro, strategic planner with the US air force, have written this article. Colby and Mastro have warned that US military deployment in Europe against the background of the Russia-Ukraine tension will be a blunder on the Biden administration. The US analysts have warned that the US efforts to stop China in the Pacific sector could get hampered due to the increased deployment in Europe.

The United States is making efforts to keep the Indo-Pacific sector free and open and saving Taiwan becomes the most vital matter to maintain the credibility of these efforts. Taiwan is the first stage in Pacific security. If Taiwan is lost, it will be difficult for the United States to protect countries like the Philippines and Japan. Colby and Mastro have warned that this would enable China to show its military dominance in the area under US influence.

If the United States remains entangled in other sectors, it will be impossible for the United States to protect Taiwan. The article in ‘Wall Street Journal also claimed that the Biden administration should be aware that Taiwan is more important than Ukraine. China should not feel that it has been presented with an opportunity to acquire Taiwan as the United States is entangled in Europe. Colby and Mastro also warned that the Biden administration should initiate moves in that direction.

Moreover, claims are also being published in the media that China can closely monitor the developments in the Russia-Ukraine issue. Thus, it can gauge the situation to decide for Taiwan. A few days ago, China criticised the United States and NATO over the Ukraine issue and declared support for Russia. Before this, Russia had accepted Taiwan as Chinese territory in a joint statement issued by both countries.
