A year ago, while signing the peace deal with Taliban, the United States had agreed to withdraw its military before May 2021. The Taliban, in return, had expressed willingness to stop violence in Afghanistan. Taliban had also assured not to have any links with Al Qaeda. But since the last few weeks, a spate of fierce attacks has been started.

Hundreds of Afghan soldiers, government officials and citizens have been killed in these attacks.  At the same time, Taliban is in control of more territory as compared to the Afghan government. As per the survey published by an Afghan news agency, Taliban is in control of 51% of the Afghan territory and 49% of the territory is under government administration. The news agency claimed that major chunk of this has been acquired by Taliban during the months November 2020 to February 2021.

Taliban has acquired control over at least 325,000 square kilometres. Whereas, less than 300,000 square kilometres is under control of the Ghani government. Taliban has claimed that 70% of the Afghan territory is under its control. Whereas, Afghanistan has claimed that although the territory is under Taliban, the control is from across the border in Pakistan. The National Security Advisor of Afghanistan accused the Taliban leaders of still plotting to control Afghanistan, sitting in Pakistan and attacking the innocent Afghanistani population.
