Russia and West confront in UNSC over missile attack in Poland

New York/Moscow: Strong repercussions were felt in the UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday over Ukraine’s missile attack on Poland on Tuesday. Although Ukraine launched the missile, the Western countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, blamed Russia for it. Russia sternly replied that it would not have launched a military campaign against Ukraine had the Western countries not supported Ukrainian aggression in the first place. On the other hand, the President of Ukraine has maintained a unilateral position of denying Ukraine’s role in the missile attack in Poland. However, the President of the United States refuted Ukraine’s claims, saying there was no evidence of Russia carrying out the attack.

On Tuesday, a Russian-made missile landed in Poland, a neighbouring country of Ukraine and a member of NATO. The missile attack occurred in the village of Przewodow at the Ukraine-Poland border, killing two people in the explosion. Since it was a Russian-made missile, there was an immediate reaction blaming Russia for the attack. Similar extreme reactions erupted on the international level, while a few European countries, including Ukraine and Poland, started spewing fire against Russia. At one point, there was fear of the Russia-Ukraine conflict turning into a Russia-NATO war due to this incident, which happened exactly when the G20 meeting was going on in Bali. The NATO member countries convened an emergency meeting during the G20 meeting.

But within hours, it was revealed that the attack was carried out from Ukraine. US President Joe Biden and NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg gave information in this regard. Therefore, the motives of some countries to blame Russia were thwarted. However, in the meeting of the UN Security Council on Wednesday, allies, including the United States, again criticized Russia. If Russia had not launched missile attacks on Ukraine, this incident would not have happened; Therefore, the ambassadors of the United States and Poland held Russia indirectly responsible for this. Rosemary DiCarlo, a senior official of the United Nations, also claimed that the end of the Russia-Ukraine conflict is not in sight, but the consequences of this conflict will be seen in such events as in the case of Poland. The British ambassador also endorsed the accusations made by the United States and Poland.

Russian ambassador Vasily Nebenzya strongly responded to the accusations of Western countries, including the United States. The Russian ambassador asserted that the Minsk Agreement was signed after the events in Ukraine in 2014. Had this agreement been implemented, Russia would not have had to undertake a military campaign in Ukraine. If the West had not intervened in Ukraine and supplied weapons, there would have been no possibility of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. If the Western countries had reprimanded the Ukrainian regime over the terrorist attacks by Ukraine, Russia would not have launched a military campaign. Ambassador Nebenzya alleged that the attack in Poland was a provocation to ignite a conflict between Russia and NATO.

Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelensky has denied that Ukraine attacked Poland. Although all countries, including the United States and Poland, have confirmed the missile attack was launched from Ukraine, the President of Ukraine seems to have maintained his obstinacy to the extent that President Biden said there is no evidence to support Zelensky’s statement.
