Canberra – The farmers in Australia have issued a serious warning that if the Australian government does not take immediate action against Rodent Plague, the epidemic will play havoc in the country for the next two years. The ‘NSW farmers’, a group of farmers, warned that the farmers in the New South Wales region will not be able to even carry out plantations in the coming season, given the epidemic and badly hit food grain production. Fears are also being expressed that if the rats playing havoc in the rural areas are not controlled, the Rodent plague could spread even to the cities like Sydney and Melbourne.
Rats are being found in huge numbers in the most populous Australian state of New South Wales. This was initially ignored as there has been a history of rat epidemics in the rural parts of Australia. But panic struck when the rat menace started spreading to the other neighbouring states. Farmers have published photographs and videos of the problem; herds of thousands of rats are seen from the farms to the warehouses. The rats that were only damaging the crops are also found to be entering houses and biting the humans and domesticated animals. Therefore, there is a strong possibility of other epidemics starting in these regions. 
The local agencies informed that the incidence of Leptospirosis has increased in these regions. It is being said that the Rodent Plague has caused enormous losses to the crops as well as the food grain stocks. Even after various measures, the local agencies and the farmers have failed to control the plague.
Financial assistance has been announced to compensate the losses to the homes, crops, and property, but it is not sufficient per the expectations of the group of NSW farmers. Xavier Martin, Vice President of NSW Farmers, warned that it would take a long time to receive the compensation announced by the government. There is an urgent need to break the cycle of rat growth. Every passing day is adding to the crisis. If this continues the same way, the farmers will have to face rat menace for the next two years.
Certain experts and analysts from Australia have expressed fears that the Rodent Plague epidemic can play havoc even in the big cities of Australia. Experts pointed out that these herds of rats can reach the cities like Sydney and Melbourne, riding in vehicles carrying food grain. However, the Australian government has imported the lethal Bromadiolone rat poison. They have warned that it could also have adverse effects on crops and the environment.
