Prime Minister Modi visits UAE

Abu Dhabi: After attending the G7 Summit in Germany, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE). UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan welcomed Prime Minister Modi at the Abu Dhabi Airport. In their discussions, the two leaders expressed their determination further to broaden the strategic partnership between India and the UAE.

Prime Minister Modi visits UAESheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, passed away on May 13. After his death, India also declared a day of national mourning. Vice President Venkaiah Naidu paid a visit to the UAE and conveyed India’s condolences. Later, Prime Minister Modi visited the UAE while returning from Germany after participating in the G7 Summit. At this time, Prime Minister Modi offered his condolences on the death of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Prime Minister Modi said that Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was a widely respected personality and worked tirelessly to benefit his people.

The Prime Minister congratulated Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who took over the reins of UAE following the death of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. There were also in-depth discussions between Prime Minister Modi and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on India’s relations with the UAE. Earlier on February 18, a virtual conversation was held between Prime Minister Modi and President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on cooperation in trade, investment, food security and defence. Trade, investment, food security and defence cooperation were the key issues in the discussions. On this occasion, India and the UAE signed a free trade agreement.

Bilateral trade between India and the UAE touched $72 billion in the financial year 2021-22. The UAE is an important trading partner of India. The UAE stands second in the list of countries with the highest Indian exports. It is believed that bilateral trade between the two countries will touch $100 billion in the next five years after the free trade agreement. Analysts in Pakistan have been expressing concern that India’s influence on the Gulf region is increasing further due to cooperation with the UAE. Pakistan has been looking at the collaboration between India and the UAE with uneasiness, especially after the UAE announced large investments in Jammu and Kashmir.
