Permanent membership in the Security Council is India’s right – Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar

New York – US President Joe Biden supports Germany, Japan and India as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). On the condition of anonymity, a Biden administration official informed. However, this official has also warned that a lot has to be done. Moreover, India’s lack of permanent membership in the Security Council is not good for India only, but it also becomes a matter of regret for the UNSC, which has not changed much, India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has said.

The United States has long been supportive of the permanent membership of Germany, Japan and India in the Security Council. But much needs to be done for this, the US official has said. Earlier, the US had openly supported India’s permanent membership. So there is nothing much new in the claim made by the US authorities. But for that, they seem to have made India aware of its condition by saying that ‘a lot has to be done’. The cooperation of all countries is expected to change the rules of the United Nations. Exceptionally, this would not be possible unless the countries in the Security Council take the initiative for changes. However, these countries are not showing the necessary enthusiasm for it, which has stalled the expansion of the Security Council’s permanent members.

There have been no changes in the United Nations Security Council for the past 80 years. These changes should have happened much earlier. However, the work on it has not yet started, said India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, who criticised the United Nations and the Security Council for being run in an outdated manner. India will soon become the third largest economy in the world. Also, Foreign Minister Jaishankar asserted that India is becoming the most populous country and that the country has the right to permanent membership in the Security Council.

India not being a permanent member of the Security Council is bad for India. However, this raises questions on the credibility of the United Nations, the Foreign Minister of India pointed out. The Foreign Minister also claimed that when he said that he has been working on India getting a permanent membership, he was serious about it. Meanwhile, India has begun to more aggressively stake its claim for permanent membership over the past few years. Permanent member countries such as the US, Russia, the UK, and France had already announced their support for India’s claim. However, China has been opposing India’s permanent membership.

Along with India, Germany, Japan, and Brazil have also been demanding the expansion of the Security Council’s permanent members. Five countries alone cannot conduct the world. These countries demand that permanent members be expanded according to the changing situation. However, India’s position on the international scene has been further elevated in the last few years. Due to this, India’s claim for permanent membership seems to have been strengthened in the same proportion. The Foreign Minister of India has repeatedly made aware of this at the international level.
