Japan approves US deployment in Japan due to threat from China, North Korea and Russia

Tokyo/Washington: The Japanese parliament sanctioned the provision for $8.6 billion required for the US military deployment in Japan. As per the agreement signed between the two countries regarding this, Japan will also purchase an ‘Advanced Virtual Combat Training System’ for war exercises. As per the proposal sanctioned by the Japanese parliament, the new agreement will be valid till March 2027. The sanction awarded by the Japanese parliament against the background of the increasing threat from China, North Korea and Russia became significant. Over the last few days, Chinese, North Korean and Russian aggressive actions have increased near the Japanese airspace and marine region. Russia has started a significant exercise near the Kuril Islands. North Korea is conducting successive tests of ballistic and nuclear missiles. Chinese destroyers attempted intrusion in the Senkaku Islands region a few days ago. Against all of this background, Japan has adopted a more aggressive stance.

The United States has more than 20 military bases in Japan and more than 55,000 soldiers are deployed on these bases. A few years ago, there was a dispute between the United States and Japan over the deployment and the expenditure incurred for this deployment. The United States had demanded additional funds from Japan. But Japan had rejected the US demand. Meanwhile, the US defence department informed that the United States and Japan held a joint military exercise in the Shizuoka Islands area. A unit of the US marine corps is participating in the exercise and it is said that F-35 fighter jets are participating in the activities for the first time.
