Israeli Foreign Minister on a historic visit to Bahrain

Manama: – On Thursday, Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid arrived in Bahrain to strengthen cooperation between the two countries under the Abraham Accord. The Israeli Foreign Minister held a meeting with King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain. This is the first Bahrain visit of the Israeli Foreign Minister. A few days ago, Israel claimed that other Arab countries are also eager to join the Abraham Accord with Israel, like Bahrain and United Arab Emirates (UAE).

A year ago, the historic Abraham Accord was signed between Israel, UAE and Bahrain, mediated by the United States. According to the agreement, these three countries agreed to enhance cooperation. The then-US President Donald Trump that this would help reduce differences between Israel and the Arab world. Sudan and Morocco also later joined the agreement with Israel. It is claimed that this cooperation between Israel and the Arab world will help ease the tensions in the Middle East.  

Over the past year, the UAE and Bahrain have opened embassies in Israel. Israel has also made its embassies operational in UAE and Morocco. The operation took place during the visit of Israeli Foreign Minister Lapid to UAE and Morocco in June. On Thursday, the Israeli Foreign Minister arrived in Manama to open the Israeli embassy in Bahrain, like the UAE and Morocco. Foreign Minister Lapid met with King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain and Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. It is claimed that the Abraham Accord between Israel, the UAE and Bahrain is based entirely on economic and trade cooperation. But the threat posed by Iran to the security of the Middle Eastern countries is said to have drawn Israel and the Arab nations closer, under the auspices of this agreement. Analysts in Iran had earlier criticized the deal as a challenge to Iran. Iran also lashed out at Arab countries for establishing cooperation with Israel.  

Meanwhile, earlier, Israel had claimed that Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries might soon join the Abraham Accord. A few days ago, more than 300 leaders in Iraq appealed that their country too should join the Abraham Accord.
