Indian Navy Chief Lanba’s visit to Iran

New Delhi: Indian Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba started his visit to Iran on Sunday. A 3-day ‘Indian Ocean Naval Symposium’ (IONS) and ‘Conclave of Chiefs’ will begin on Monday in the Iranian capital Tehran. Admiral Lanba is in Iran along with the delegation for the conference.

‘IONS’ was established in 2008 with the initiative of the Indian Navy to improve maritime cooperation between the naval forces of countries in the Indian Ocean region. It consists of 23 member countries alongwith 9 observers. India had led the ‘IONS’ in 2008 and 2009. Thereafter, ‘IONS’ was organised by the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Australia and Bangladesh. This year Iran will be hosting the ‘IONS’.

Meanwhile, the objective of Admiral Lanba’s visit is also to strengthen the ties between Indian and Iranian Navy. Navy Chief Lanba will meet the Iranian naval officers for bilateral discussions. At the same time, Admiral Lanba will also have discussions with the Naval Chiefs of the other IONS member countries.
