Phnom Penh: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the G-20 summit in Indonesia. He is expected to hold bilateral talks with US President Joe Biden. There are indications that discussions between the foreign ministers of Cambodia, India and the United States have been held in preparation for these talks. Jaishankar also held talks with the Foreign Minister of Ukraine before the meeting with the US Secretary of State. On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar visited Russia and held discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Against this background, the importance of Jaishankar’s talks with the foreign minister of Ukraine and the US State Secretary has increased further.
Jaishankar said on social media that he had a discussion with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken regarding the Ukraine conflict, G-20, energy issues, and the Indo-Pacific region. Along with this, the media is predicting that the preparations for the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Biden during the G-20 have been discussed between the foreign ministers of both countries. Especially after the conflict in Ukraine, when the relations between India and the United States are somewhat strained, the importance of this discussion between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden has increased. At the same time, the western media is also publishing news in this regard, pointing to the fact that India can use its influence with Russia to end the conflict in Ukraine. The discussion between External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and Secretary of State Blinken is also being viewed from this perspective.
Last Tuesday itself, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar visited Russia and like Prime Minister Modi, he told Russia that ‘this is not the time for war’. Western media picked up on this message and claimed that India could use its influence over Russia to stop the conflict in Ukraine. Western media is also citing good Indian relations with Ukraine. In particular, the US media gave special publicity to the message given by India during Jaishankar’s visit to Russia. After this, US Secretary for Treasury Janet Yellen visited India. It is being discussed that she also expressed the expectations that the United States had from India regarding Ukraine during this visit.
In such a situation, the discussion between Prime Minister Modi and US President Biden has attracted the attention of both Indian and US media and global media. Analysts are pointing out that although India’s cooperation with Russia is not acceptable to the United States, considering the importance of India, the United States has no choice but to compromise. This could influence the meeting between the two leaders.
