Release of Meng Wanzhou is China’s victory, boasts Chinese press

Beijing/ Washington: The top executive of Huawei, Meng Wanzhou, has been released after signing the Deferred Prosecution Agreement with the US Justice Department. Before Meng got released, China released Canadian citizens Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor. Thus, this has clarified that China had detained these two Canadian citizens in response to Meng’s detention. However, the Chinese media has begun claiming that Meng’s release marks the victory of the Chinese regime’s policy against the United States.

In December 2018, Wanzhou Meng, a top-level executive of Chinese Communist Regime backed company Huawei, was arrested in Canada. Following that, movements were initiated to surrender her to the United States. But, Meng filed a legal petition demanding to stop her extradition. At the same time, the Chinese Communist Party issued threats to the United States and Canada. Besides, they also made efforts to pressure the countries on other fronts. However, the Canadian agencies detained Meng consistently for three years.

On Friday, Meng partook in the hearing held in the United States virtually, wherein she accepted the US proposal. Meng signed the Deferred Prosecution Agreement and did not plead guilty. As per the agreement, even though the United States will not take any action against Meng, it will continue its legal actions against Huawei. Moreover, China released Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor before the release of Meng.

The Chinese media and analysts have begun claiming that Meng’s release is a victory for China. Besides, CCP mouthpiece Global Times said that Meng’s release is a result of China’s ruling communist regime’s aggressive stance against the United States and Canada; also, the consistent pressure by the CCP on the two countries. At this time, the US-China meeting held in July was also mentioned. The list given by China to the United States during the meeting demanded the release of Meng. So, the Chinese mouthpiece boasted that the United States has accepted its fault by releasing Meng.

However, the foreign press drew attention to the fact that Meng’s release is correlated to the release of Canadian citizens; so, the Chinese claims are invalid. The ruling Chinese leaders had consistently claimed that Meng and the action against two Canadian citizens are unrelated. However, the events that unfurled in the last 24 hours have confirmed the claims that China used Hostage Diplomacy, accused the foreign media. Meanwhile, the criticism against US President Joe Biden seems to have intensified after Meng’s release. Besides, Meng’s release signifies that the Biden administration bowed before China; such criticism may start by the Republican Party, as per the claims.
