European Union imposes sanctions on Russia’s Wagner Group

Brussels – The European Union (EU) has imposed financial sanctions on the Wagner Group, which has carried out covert operations in Ukraine, Libya and Syria, as well as human rights abuses, following Russia’s orders. The European Union has accused Russia of destabilising the concerned countries by using this company that supplies mercenaries. With the help of the United States and Britain, the European Union is considering imposing new sanctions on Russia. Therefore, it is claimed that the United States and its European allies are preparing to impose tough economic sanctions on Russia, similar to those set in 2014.

The European Union (EU) has blamed Wagner’s men for serious human rights abuses in Ukraine, Syria, Libya, the Central African Republic (CAR), Sudan and Mozambique. France and Germany have strongly criticised Wagner’s private troopers during the Libyan civil war. It was alleged that Russian mercenaries were also involved in the conflict in Mali.

The sanctions were announced at a meeting of European foreign ministers, citing Wagner’s military intervention. Along with Wagner, eight Russian officials and three energy companies were also included in the sanctions. Accordingly, Russian companies, as well as officials, will be barred from entering European countries.
