Brussels – The European Union (EU) has imposed financial sanctions on the Wagner Group, which has carried out covert operations in Ukraine, Libya and Syria, as well as human rights abuses, following Russia’s orders. The European Union has accused Russia of destabilising the concerned countries by using this company that supplies mercenaries. With the help of the United States and Britain, the European Union is considering imposing new sanctions on Russia. Therefore, it is claimed that the United States and its European allies are preparing to impose tough economic sanctions on Russia, similar to those set in 2014.
Wagner is a company that includes Russian veterans who have retired from the Russian military. Russia uses these mercenaries for their military or covert operations in foreign countries. Russia’s Wagner also operates similar to American mercenary companies like Blackwater, G4S, Triple Canopy and Vinyl Corporation. On Monday, the European Union made serious allegations against the Russian company. The European Union (EU) has blamed Wagner’s men for serious human rights abuses in Ukraine, Syria, Libya, the Central African Republic (CAR), Sudan and Mozambique. France and Germany have strongly criticised Wagner’s private troopers during the Libyan civil war. It was alleged that Russian mercenaries were also involved in the conflict in Mali.
The sanctions were announced at a meeting of European foreign ministers, citing Wagner’s military intervention. Along with Wagner, eight Russian officials and three energy companies were also included in the sanctions. Accordingly, Russian companies, as well as officials, will be barred from entering European countries.
Besides, a European Union official told the media that the accounts of those Russian companies would also be frozen. It is claimed that it will not be possible for the government of any country to work with the Wagner Group. Russia has dismissed the allegations levelled by the European Union.
The Russian government has stated that Wagner is an independent company and is not linked with the Russian government or agencies. At the same time, the Russian government has said that the decision does not affect Russia, saying that the company does not protect Russian interests in any way on the international level.
Meanwhile, two days ago, the G7 countries warned Russia of dire consequences over the Ukraine issue. Russia’s attack on Ukraine would be a mistake, G7 countries warned. The EU seems to have warned Russia by imposing sanctions on the Wagner Group.
