China warns US over weapons supply to Taiwan

Beijing/Washington: China has warned that it will retaliate with firm and decisive action if the United States continues to supply arms to Taiwan. US President Joe Biden has proposed to supply arms worth more than $1 billion to Taiwan. This was the Chinese reaction to it. While China is issuing this warning, Taiwan has also warned that China should not test its patience.

Moreover, as per the Chinese stance, Taiwan is its own sovereign territory and no other country should establish diplomatic and military cooperation with Taiwan. But without paying any heed to this Chinese position, the United States has started increasing trade, diplomatic and defence cooperation with Taiwan. Currently, discussions on trade cooperation are going on between the United States and Taiwan. At the same time, visits to Taiwan by senior members of the US Congress, including the Speaker of the House of Representatives, have also started.

Since Biden took office, the United States has approved various proposals for defence assistance to Taiwan thrice. But against the background of the aggressive military activities by China, in the last few days, preparations have been started by the United States for a large-scale supply of arms. The proposal includes air-to-air ‘Sidewinder’ missiles, ‘Harpoon missiles’, and surveillance radars.

There was a strong reaction from China to this new US proposal. The United States needs to stop the arms supply to Taiwan immediately. The United States should not take steps to increase the tension in Taiwanese territory. If this happens, China can take concrete and decisive action to protect its sovereignty and interests, warned Liu Pengyu, spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in the United States. Meanwhile, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has issued a fresh warning to China. ‘There will be no provocation from Taiwan. If the enemy tries to provoke more, we will try to maintain calm and restraint. But that doesn’t mean we will not respond.’ President Tsai Ing-wen warned that we had given appropriate orders to the ministry of defence of Taiwan in this regard. The Taiwanese defence department informed that on Tuesday, 24 warplanes and 11 warships tried to infiltrate Taiwanese territory.
