Nearly 2 million killed in Chinese nuclear tests between 1964 and 1996, informs US periodical

Washington: – Between 1964 and 1996, radiation from China’s nuclear tests in Xinjiang killed 194 thousand people. Not only that, about 1.2 million people have been diagnosed with cancer, and women have been diagnosed with deadly diseases of the uterus. A month ago, it was feared that radiation was coming from China’s Taishan nuclear plant. The Chinese authorities had tried to suppress the case. However, the information provided by the French company revealed the secret of China’s communist regime. Against this backdrop, the issue of the safety of China’s nuclear program has become sensitive.

China conducted its first nuclear test on October 16, 1964, in the Lop Nur Desert in Xinjiang Province. Since then, China has conducted 45 consecutive nuclear tests in Lop Nur until 1996. Of these, 23 trials were conducted in the air, while the rest were conducted underground, according to a leading US magazine. China also conducted thermonuclear tests during this period. It was a nuclear test 200 times more powerful than the atomic bomb, dropped by the United States on the Japanese city of Hiroshima during World War II.

The United States, last year, accused that some of these tests violated the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. China has denied the allegations. But over 32 years, intense radiation from China’s nuclear tests killed 1.94 million people, according to a US magazine. The radiation from the Xinjiang nuclear tests was even greater than the radiation from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power plant, claims a Japanese researcher. The radiation affected about 1.2 million people in Xinjiang province with leukaemia, cancer, and women with life-threatening uterine diseases. The Lop Nur area, once a saltwater lake, is now dry, the US magazine noted. In the aftermath, China shifted the location of its nuclear tests. It has also refrained from speaking out on the radiation in Lop Nur and allegations levelled by the US magazine. Even now, it is being revealed that China is secretive regarding its nuclear program.

About a month and a half ago, fears of radiation emanating from the Taishan nuclear plant in China’s Guangdong province. It was warned that the leak of fusion gas from the nuclear plant could be a serious safety issue. The US media has claimed that the incident was similar to the one in Chernobyl. But the Chinese authorities tried to suppress the case by saying that everything was well.

But the French company responsible for the maintenance of the Taishan project has exposed China. The French company had said that if the project had been in their country, it would have been shut down immediately. In other words, China is taking a considerable risk with the project, the French company warned.
