Assembly elections announced in five states

New Delhi – Assembly elections have been announced in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa. The election will be held in seven phases between February 10 and March 7, the Election Commission announced. Election rallies and roadshows have been banned till January 15, given the Coronavirus pandemic, Election Commission has warned. The results of the elections of all the five states will be declared on March 10.

According to the Election Commission, women voters are 8.5 crores. Uttar Pradesh, the largest state in the country, has 403 assembly constituencies. Therefore, this state will be voting in all seven phases. The next big state, Punjab, has 117 constituencies and Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa have 70, 60 and 40 constituencies, respectively. The candidates have been offered the facility to file their nominations online regarding the Coronavirus pandemic.

Election rallies, roadshows, marches and vehicle rallies have been banned in all these states till January 15, given the threat posed by Coronavirus. The election commission announced that the decision to allow or deny would be taken only after reviewing the situation after January 15. This will impose heavy restrictions on election campaigning. However, suppose the political parties do not follow the rules required to prevent the Coronavirus pandemic. In that case, the Election Commission will not waste time in taking action, the commission has warned.

The Election Commission has suggested that political parties and candidates should conduct their campaigns through virtual and digital media given the threat posed by the pandemic. The commission has instructed that if rallies are permitted after January 15, the political parties will supply masks and sanitisers to the attendees. The results of these elections will be declared on March 10. The commission also pointed out that there will be restrictions even on the victory marches and celebrations after the election results are declared.

Senior officials from the commission informed that all necessary precautions and facilities to stop the spread of Coronavirus would be there at the polling booths. More than nine crore voters have received both doses of the Corona vaccine in all the five states where elections have been declared. According to Election Commission officials, the number of voters who received a single dose of the corona vaccine is more than 15 crore.
