India will need concerted efforts to attain level of US and China in the Artificial Intelligence sector – CEO of NITI Aayog

Mumbai: Amitabh Kant, the Chief Executive Officer of the NITI Aayog, pointed out that it is claimed that the country that leads the Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector will dominate the world in the coming times. But India lags far behind in this sector compared to the United States and China. India will have to put in a lot of effort to achieve leadership in this sector.’ Amitabh Kant virtually addressed the ‘Internet and Mobile Association of India’ function held in Mumbai.

Saying that everyone has to unite for research and provide an impetus to necessary items, Amitabh Kant pointed out that there is a need for consorted efforts in the sector. Amitabh Kant pointed out that AI is developing well in the private sector and is no longer remaining a technology out of the purview of the common man.

Furthermore, the use of AI is increasing in all sectors. Taking this into account, India should make special efforts to develop manpower and the skill set in this sector. Besides, Kant has claimed that efforts will be required to develop students’ related skills in AI and impart training to the professionals. Amitabh Kant has pointed out that India is lagging behind the United States and China and a report published only four days ago shows the reality for Indians.

The report claims that the Indian investment in the AI sector could be at the most $880 million by 2023. The investment in AI almost doubled last year on the international level. But Indian share in this was a meagre 1.5%. Amitabh Kant cited that if India intends to lead in this sector, massive investments will have to be made in the AI sector.

Experts say AI will occupy everything from defence to commodities in daily use in the coming times. The influence of AI on human life cannot be avoided. Russian President Vladimir Putin warned a few years ago that the country leading the AI sector would dominate the world. The warning is becoming a reality today. In this scenario, India cannot afford to lag behind a mighty adversary like China in the AI sector. Therefore, the warning issued by Amitabh Kant becomes noteworthy.
