US President delays action against companies linked to Chinese military

Washington/Beijing : US President Joe Biden has deferred the action against the companies linked to the Chinese military. The reason stated for making the decision is that the policy by the former Trump administration was structured in haste, and it needs to be made more comprehensive. The Biden administration has been known to reverse certain decisions taken by the Trump administration regarding China. Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House of Representatives and senior leader of the Democratic Party, has demanded a boycott of the Winter Olympics to be held in China.

The Trump administration started cornering China with series of bold decisions on the issues like trade malpractices, espionage, dominance in the technology sector, infiltration in the educational institutions and investments. Uneasy with the action, China had warned of retaliation while firing salvos of criticism at the United States. After the change of guard in the United States, new President, Joe Biden, indicated softening the stand against China. Accordingly, President Biden initiated the process of reviewing the decisions taken by the previous administration.

The decision taken by the Biden administration on Tuesday also seems to be part of the process. The Trump administration had decided to ban the companies linked with the Chinese military, active in the US stock market. As per the ban, it was clarified that the US companies would not be able to invest or carry out any transactions with these companies after a specific period. However, after taking over as the president, Biden said that there is a need to review the decision; he then increased the period of concession for the Chinese companies. According to the order issued on Tuesday, the duration was extended again, and the deadline for transactions is now 11th June.

While President Biden is taking decisions in favour of China, the speaker of the US Congress, Nancy Pelosi, has adopted an aggressive stand against China. Pelosi demanded the US administration boycott the winter Olympics organised in China next year in protest of the atrocities against the Uyghurs and other minority communities. Pelosi has mentioned a ‘Diplomatic Boycott’ in her demand. The speaker of the US Congress has appealed to heads of all the countries not to participate in the winter Olympics to be held in China next year.

Multiple incidents of inhuman atrocities against the Tibetan people and the Uyghurs have been reported over the last few years. The United Nations also has taken cognisance of the matter and criticised China over it. At the same time, the United States, the European countries and other leading countries have become aggressive on this issue, and the demand for a ban on winter Olympics has intensified. Along with many US Congressmen, the demand is receiving increasing support from countries like the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

Many leading voluntary organisations in the world have also upheld the demand for a ban and called on the participating athletes to ban the Olympics. House Speaker Pelosi had adopted an insistent stand against China on human rights issues in the past as well. A few weeks ago, she accused that the Chinese regime is running a systematic campaign to finish the distinctive Tibetan culture. Moreover, Pelosi warned that the United States would never stop targeting China over the Tibet issue.
