Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi passes away

Kanchipuram (Tamil Nadu): Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi, the 69th head of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, died on Wednesday of a cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Tamil Nadu’s Kanchipuram.

ShankaracharyaShankaracharya was not keeping well for quite some time with complaints regarding difficulties in breathing. He was admitted to the hospital with uneasiness in breathing while his blood pressure too had gone low. His body had stopped responding to the treatment due to age, said the hospital sources. He was 82 at the time of his death.

Born on July 18th in the year 1935, Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi was appointed successor by the 68th head of the peetham, Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi in March 1954. Now, after death of Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi, Vijayendra Saraswathi will be made the 70th head of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham.

History notes Aadi Shankaracharya having established the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham almost 2,520 years ago. A large number of devotees on knowing about the sad demise rushed to seek Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi’s darshan. The final ritual for burying the mortal remains, called ‘Brindhavana Pravesam,’ was conducted on Thursday, March 1st, 2018.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ramnath Kovind expressed their grief on the sad demise of Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi.
