In 1957, India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, visited Hiroshima. After that, Modi became the second Prime Minister of India to visit Hiroshima, which was devastated by the atomic bomb attack of the Second World War. His visit is considered historic. As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine takes a dire turn, the G7 member states have prepared to impose tougher sanctions on Russia. Besides, it indicates that G7 will adopt a tough stance against China’s hegemonic policy. Against this backdrop, India’s role in the Ukraine conflict and regarding China becomes very important. In an interview with Nikkei Asia, the Prime Minister articulated the country’s position.

India is fully capable of defending its sovereignty and dignity. India’s relationship with China will depend on mutual respect, tolerance, and protection of mutual interests. The Prime Minister said that if the relations between India and China were smooth, it would also positively impact the region and outside the area. Although China is a powerful country, the Prime Minister seems to have conveyed that India is ready to protect its security and interests before this G7 meeting.

Moreover, India expects normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan as it should have been with the neighbouring countries. But Pakistan is responsible for creating a terror-free and non-hostile environment and taking appropriate steps. Prime Minister Modi further said in this interview that relations between the two countries cannot come to a normal level without them doing so.

Replying to a question about the conflict in Ukraine, the Prime Minister made aware that India’s position in this regard was very clear. The Prime Minister said that in this conflict, India is not on the side of any country but stands on the side of peace. Also, the Prime Minister expressed his concern that the shortage of food grains, fuel and fertilisers caused by the conflict in Ukraine has created huge challenges in front of the world. The Prime Minister said that India was committed to supporting the affected countries.

Despite the challenging situation in the world, the Indian economy has been progressing at the highest growth rate. In 2014, India was the tenth-largest economy in the world. But now India has become the fifth largest economy in the world. The Prime Minister has said that the necessary foundation for this economic development has been laid, and its results have begun to appear.
