Japanese PM Shinzo Abe wins 2/3rd majority in upper house

On Sunday, Japan’s PM Shinzo Abe’s ruling party won the parliamentary elections and gained 2/3rd majority in the upper house strengthening the efforts to bring constitutional reforms in the country.

China being upset with Abe’s win, it’s official news agency ,Xinhua criticised Japan’s election result. It mentioned it as a threat to regional stability.

japan-abe-victoryTwo years ago, PM Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party in coalition with the ruling government parties had won in the lower house securing 325 seats out of 475. However, due to lack of requisite majority in the upper house of parliament, policies and plans put forward by Abe faced constraints in it’s implementation.. Post Sunday’s win, Abe’s party will no longer face lack of majority in the upper house.

The LDP ruling party headed by PM Abe won 70 seats out of 121 seats in the upper house election, contested on Sunday. Apart from this, few opposition candidates also supported Abe, indicated Japanese sources.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe contested elections through a propaganda on policies for Japan’s economic reforms. Although, Abe’s financial policies faced criticism for its failure, it is clearly evident from the election’s outcome that Japanese citizens trusted his policies. 

The opposition party while criticizing Abe’s policies admitted that they failed to give an alternative. 

Prime Minister Abe stated that an aggressive role in establishing national security was essential due to the security threats from China and North Korea over the last few months. To counter this, constitutional amendments were necessary.This required the winning of majority seats in the election. 

After gaining the majority, Abe is expected to speed up the process of constitutional amendments. 

Due to Japan’s Prime Minister’s Policies, the environment in China is tense. Prime Minister Abe’s win by majority seats has caused distress to China, which is apparent from the articles published in Xinhua. 

Xinhua, in its article while criticizing Prime Minister Abe’s victory stated it to be dangerous to regional stability. As of now Prime Minister Abe holds more power and the same can be used for constitutional amendments. Japans militarization is a cause of worry to it neighbouring countries. 

These policies are not beneficial to anyone”, an unpleasant remark was expressed in the article of China’s news agency.
