India is building six Scorpene-class submarines under Project-75. Of these, S-21 INS Kalvari was inducted into the Navy in December 2017, while S-22 INS Khanderi was inducted into the Navy in September 2019. INS Karanj joined the Navy in March 2021 and INS Vela in November 2021. After this, Vagir will be inducted in the Navy and it is believed that this will further enhance the capability of the Navy.

Naval spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal informed that the trials of this Vagir were completed in a much shorter time than other submarines, which will speed up the induction of Vagir into the Navy. Commander Madhwal further said that these submarines built under Project-75 are a robust step towards a self-reliant India. More importantly, the destroyer ‘INS Mormugao’ joined the Indian Navy on Sunday. Due to this, a welcome picture emerges that warships, destroyers and submarines are being added to the Navy regularly.

The Kilo-class submarines of the Indian Navy will soon be retired. Before that, the inclusion of modern submarines in the Navy becomes very necessary. For this, India has taken steps to build new submarines. Especially after the Chinese Navy started increasing its presence in the region to challenge India’s natural influence in the Indian Ocean region, it became imperative for India to increase its naval capabilities. A Chinese analyst warned some time ago that and India should not consider the Indian Ocean region as its backyard. This warning indicates the Chinese intention to increase its naval presence in the Indian Ocean region.

Most of China’s commercial traffic passes through the Indian Ocean region. This also includes transporting fuel. China is concerned that the Indian Navy in the Strait of Malacca could easily intercept its maritime traffic. Thus, China had started its naval activities to reduce the dominance of the Indian Navy here. But despite trying, China has not been able to achieve this goal. Because of this, analysts say that China cannot take an extreme position against India in border and any other dispute. Thus, China is increasing the capacity of its Navy and building new warships, destroyers and submarines. Keeping this in mind, India has to increase its naval capabilities continuously. Hence, strategic analysts suggest that India should also continue to increase its naval strength in the coming times.
