Farewell to India’s nightingale Lata Didi

Mumbai – India had become worried about the report that Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar had contracted Corona and was admitted to the hospital. But after it was clarified that her condition was improving, the entire country breathed a sigh of relief. But it was reported that Lata Didi expired at 8:12 am on Sunday. A wave of sadness engulfed the country. Moreover, countries neighbouring India responded emotionally to her demise.

India, Lata Didi, Lata Mangeshkar, Narendra Modi, Pakistan, Bharat RatnaOn Sunday, her body was kept at Shivaji Park for final viewing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, and renowned personalities from art and culture were present for the event. Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar was given a funeral with full state honours. It was difficult for the people attending and those watching the funeral on media to control their emotions.

President Ram Nath Kovind expressed his condolences saying, ‘we have lost an artist born but once in centuries’. Whereas, Prime Minister Modi said that the vacuum created with the demise of Lata Didi could never be filled. Vice President Venkaiah Naidu expressed his emotions saying that India has lost its voice. The musical legacy Lata Didi had, her background, her songs are being revived and listened to in the country in her remembrance. Lata Didi, who had a career span of over eight decades, has sung more than 25,000 songs in 36 languages. Her music has crossed the barriers of country, language and cultures. Her fans are spread all around the globe.

Pakistan was formed after India divided. Over a period, Bangladesh separated from Pakistan. But Lata Didi is equally esteemed in all three countries. While carrying out household chores, women from these countries listen and hum songs sung by Lata Didi. The Pakistani journalist expressed regret that such a great singer could not be invited to Lahore or Karachi.

Meanwhile, the union government has declared national mourning for two days on the demise of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar. Whereas the Maharashtra government has declared a state holiday on 7th February.
