Draupadi Murmu takes oath as the President of India

New Delhi: Draupadi Murmu became the 15th President of India on Monday after taking the oath given by Chief Justice N. Ramana. Later, she reached the Rashtrapati Bhavan and took over the President’s office from the outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind. “The presidency I got is not my success but the success of every poor in India. A girl who started her journey from a remote tribal village in Odisha and came from a place where even primary education was a dream has become the President of the country. This is the greatness of India, the mother of democracy,” Murmu praised the democratic system in India in her speech after taking the oath of office. Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and all Union Ministers, Leaders of Opposition, and Chief Ministers of various states were present on this occasion. Draupadi Murmu became the first President of India from a tribal community. Murmu, who hails from the Santhal tribal community of Odisha, also wore the traditional sari worn by the Santhal community during the swearing-in ceremony on Monday. The counting of votes for the presidential election was completed on Thursday, 21st July. Murmu was elected to the post of President by securing 60 per cent of the votes worth 673 thousand from MLAs and MPs of the country. Her victory was almost certain before the election. Due to this, there was an atmosphere of enthusiasm among the tribal community as well. Her election was celebrated by organizing ceremonies in many places. Murmu said on this occasion that the dreams of ordinary poor Indians could be fulfilled; my election for the post of President is good proof. India is celebrating the Amrit Mahotsav (Diamond Jubilee) of Independence. I have assumed this responsibility when we are completing 75 years of independence. Murmu underlined that this is the time for new resolutions. On this occasion, President Murmu commemorated all the freedom fighters who sacrificed and contributed to the country’s freedom.

She also pointed to the fact that she was the first President born in independent India. But to fulfil the expectations of the freedom fighters from the citizens of independent India, we have to work fast during Amrit Mahotsav. In the next 25 years, when the country will complete 100 years of independence, the development will be essential to take it to the peak of success. However, President Murmu said that this development should be achieved through collective efforts with a sense of duty. She underlined her goal with the line ‘Mo Jeevan Pache Narke Padi Thau, Jagat Praksha Heu’. She concluded her speech by elucidating the meaning of this line that working for the world’s welfare is far greater than one’s interests.

Meanwhile, Draupadi Murmu is showered with wishes from home and abroad after assuming the post of President. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Draupadi Murmu’s taking over as the President of India was a historic moment for ordinary Indians. Russian President Vladimir Putin also wished Murmu. He expressed confidence that the relations between India and Russia would prosper during Murmu’s tenure. Chinese President Xi Jinping has also congratulated President Murmu and hoped mutual trust and cooperation would increase during Murmu’s term. The leadership of Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka have also wished President Murmu.
