World Meteorological Organization appreciates the Indian Meteorological Department

New Delhi: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) had acknowledged the accurate prediction of the Amphan cyclone made by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The WMO appreciated the IMD by stating that this accurate prediction and timely warning has helped avert the loss of life to a great extent. Moreover, the WMO also termed the handling of cyclone situation by the IMD as an excellent lesson.

In May, 128 people lost their lives due to the Amphan cyclone that hit the regions in Odisha, West Bengal and Bangladesh. The IMD had forecasted this calamity, and hence, thousands of people were moved to shelters for safety. For the first time in 20 years, such a cyclone hit the coast of India and Bangladesh. In 1998, about 20,000 died due to such a cyclone. However, this time, the loss of life could be averted due to the accurate forecast. Moreover, the WMO acknowledged and appreciated this effort of the IMD.

Furthermore, India alerted 13 nations, including Bangladesh and Bhutan. Hence, as a precaution, these nations had suggested some measures as well. The WMO has mentioned this fact in the letter applauding the Indian efforts, informed Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director-General of the Indian Meteorological Department.

Last year, the Odisha coast was hit by Phani cyclone. Even then, the WMO had appreciated the accuracy of the Indian Meteorological Department. Last week, the Konkan coast was hit by Nisarg cyclone, but due to the unerring of the IMD, collateral damage was averted once again.
