Government of Afghanistan issues order to release two thousand Taliban prisoners

Kabul – After the Taliban announced a 3-day ceasefire, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has ordered to release two thousand Taliban prisoners. It has created a conducive environment for talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban. The people of Afghanistan are expressing their satisfaction over the peaceful passing of the first day of the ceasefire declared by the Taliban.

On 29th February, a peace treaty was signed between the United States and the Taliban. The deal calls for the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners in Afghanistan. The government of Afghanistan had also agreed to release the prisoners in steps. Some prisoners were even released. However, after attacks in Afghanistan by the Taliban increased, Ghani had halted the prisoner release.
                         
 The Taliban has announced a 3-day ceasefire for the festive month of Ramadan. Following this, the President of Afghanistan, expressing his goodwill, decided to release 2000 Taliban prisoners. Also, the Afghan president has declared that the government of Afghanistan is ready for the discussions with the Taliban. However, the Taliban has not responded yet.
   
Meanwhile, India has welcomed the Taliban’s ceasefire. India had appeal, to extend the period of ceasefire. The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has also welcomed the Taliban ceasefire. The temporary ceasefire is an opportunity of peace for the Government of Afghanistan and the Taliban, he said. Pompeo has asked both the sides to take advantage of this opportunity and strive for peace in Afghanistan.
