The Myanmar population opposed this military action and took to the streets to protest against the Junta regime. The people of Myanmar have refused to retreat despite the cruel actions and inhuman atrocities carried out by the military. Even after four months, the intensity of the agitation is only seen to be increasing. At the same time, the form of protests against the Junta regime also is changing. The locals have started an armed struggle against the military in many parts of Myanmar. New armed groups have been formed in certain areas, and the old rebel groups also seem to have taken up arms again. On Saturday, the military raided a village in the Irrawaddy Delta region. The military gave the reason that there was a stock of weapons hidden in the village, and the action was taken to seize the arms haul. But the villagers bitterly opposed the military action. As a result, 20 people were killed, and many were injured in the conflict that ensued between the villagers and the military. The military refused to react to the incident.

It has been revealed that there had been an encounter between the armed local groups and the military in the Mindat region in the Chin province before the action in the Irrawaddy Delta region. On Wednesday, last week, the military took over a village on the Chin-Magway border. Chinland Defence Force, a local armed group, attacked a military post in the Htilin Township area to avenge the military action. The local group claimed that a minimum of seven soldiers were killed in the attack. The website, Myanmar Now, has published a report regarding this. It is being revealed that the encounters between the local armed groups and the military have become a routine in Myanmar.

Against this background, General Min Aung Hlaing, the Chief of the Junta regime, confessed that the Myanmar military has not taken control of certain parts of the country. The website ‘The Irrawaddy’ posted that this was informed during General Hlaing’s interview with a Chinese news channel.

Meanwhile, the efforts started by the ASEAN countries to find a solution to the Myanmar problem have suffered a major setback. The National Unity Government formed by leaders who were a part of the democratic government and ethnic and rebel groups has said they don’t trust ASEAN countries.

Last week, two special representatives of ASEAN visited Myanmar. However, they only met the Chief of the Junta regime and the concerned officials. Despite a request, these ASEAN representatives refused to meet the National Unity Government. Therefore, there is resentment in the pro-democracy groups, and the statements made by the National Unity Government reflect the same sentiment. It is also being complained that cognisance of the developments in Myanmar is not being taken seriously on the international level. In particular, the Biden administration, which insists on human rights and democracy, is unwilling to take stern action against the Myanmar military.
