G20 countries should cooperate against global challenges – PM Narendra Modi

New Delhi: Focus on what unites us rather than our differences, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the G20 summit. In this ongoing conference in New Delhi, the US and a group of Western countries demand to condemn Russia for attacking Ukraine. The United States and the West say that the joint statement must include the protest against Russia. Russia and China are strongly opposed to it. In such a situation, the Prime Minister of India has called upon the G20 countries to recognise their responsibility and unite to meet the global challenges. The civilisation and tradition of India, the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Buddha, tell us to forget our differences and focus on what brings us together. We are all meeting at a time when the world is in turmoil, so this meeting of the foreign ministers of the G20 countries is very important. Each country can have its own policy on the ongoing tensions worldwide. But as one of the top 20 economies in the world, we should accept the responsibility of doing something for the countries that are not here, Prime Minister Modi warned at this time.

In his speech, the Prime Minister also mentioned the possible threats from gangs, corruption, and terrorism, hich commit crimes without respecting the borders of countries. However, the Prime Minister refrained from directly referring to Ukraine’s war or other contentious issues. But the United States, Britain, and the European Union have maintained their resolve to condemn Russia’s attack on Ukraine at this conference.

On the other hand, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov strongly criticised the US and Western countries and the media for adopting a discriminatory stance towards Russia. China wants to include its proposal to stop the war in Ukraine in the G20 joint statement. India is making strong diplomatic efforts to resolve all these differences and reach a consensus for a joint statement at the G20 meeting. But at present, these are unlikely to succeed.
