India and Bangladesh sign seven cooperation agreements

New Delhi: During Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India, seven cooperation agreements were concluded between the two countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that the friendship between India and Bangladesh can overcome any problem. Also, Prime Minister Modi expressed his satisfaction by saying that Bangladesh is India’s biggest partner in the field of development and trade. The prime minister has further claimed that the issue of water sharing of Teesta river, a dispute between the two countries, will be resolved soon.

Sheikh Hasina added that India is the most important neighbour of Bangladesh. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also appreciated the support provided by the Government of India by announcing the Sheikh Mujibur Scholarship for the education of the next generation of Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Sheikh Hasina also believed that the friendship and cooperation between the two countries would reach new heights.

Furthermore, India and Bangladesh have agreed on the water sharing of the Kushiara river flowing between the two countries and a cooperation agreement was concluded on this. It is said that this will benefit the people of the southern part of the Indian state of Assam and the Sylhet region of Bangladesh. Stating that 54 rivers are flowing in both the countries and their water sharing issue will be resolved soon, Prime Minister Modi also included the issue of Teesta river water sharing in this. Relations between the two countries had been strained for some time over Bangladesh’s insistence on the water sharing of the river. But Prime Minister Modi expressed his belief that the friendship between the two countries will overcome all the problems.

Along with this, the first unit of the Maitri Thermal Power Project of both countries was unveiled on this occasion. Prime Minister Modi said that this project, which is being set up with the help of India, will provide electricity to Bangladesh at a moderate price. Along with this, the railway bridge over the Rupsa river was also inaugurated on this occasion. It is being claimed that this will increase the connectivity between the two countries. Prime Minister Modi has said that developing communication and infrastructure facilities on the border between India and Bangladesh will boost bilateral trade.

Prime Minister Modi said that currently, Bangladesh exports the most in Asia to India and that Bangladesh would benefit significantly from developing these infrastructure facilities. India will have to use the land of Bangladesh to increase trade with eastern countries and for this, India is keen to build infrastructure in the country on a large scale. Against this background, Prime Minister Modi has precisely presented the benefits to Bangladesh from this cooperation.

Along with this, an agreement has been concluded with Indian Railways to improve the railway service of Bangladesh. Consequently, the officers of the railway department of Bangladesh will be given training by the Indian Railways. Simultaneously, India and Bangladesh signed an agreement on cooperation in science, technology, and space.
