Differences among G20 members over boycotting Russia

Washington: The western countries are demanding to boycott Russia from the G20 organisation for starting a war against Ukraine. The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and their allies staged a walkout from the G20 meeting to build pressure. But India, China, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, South Africa and other countries are not agreeable to the stand. Therefore, it is exposed that there is a difference of opinion among the members of the G20 over the Russia-Ukraine war.

Differences among G20 members over boycotting RussiaMoreover, the Annual Fund-IMF meeting of Finance Ministers of G20 members is being held in Washington’s US capital. The western allies staged a walkout as soon as Russian Deputy Prime Minister Anton Siluanov stood up to speak. Janet Yellen, US Secretary for Treasury, was the first to stage a walkout against Russia and she was followed by Finance Ministers of the United Kingdom and Canada. Canadian Foreign Minister posted a photograph of the then Finance Minister staging a walkout.

But India, China, Brazil, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia did not stage a walkout. Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was present at the meeting. India has adopted a nonaligned stand in the Russia-Ukraine war. China and South Africa have held NATO responsible for the Ukraine war. The countries Brazil and Saudi Arabia have taken a stand that an essential country like Russia cannot be expelled from the organisation. Therefore, it has been exposed that there is a divide among the G20 members over the Russia issue.

Differences among G20 members over boycotting RussiaThe G20 member countries’ heads of state meeting will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia, in November. Western countries are pressurising Indonesia not to invite Russia for the meeting. US President Joe Biden has threatened to boycott the summit if Indonesia invited Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In the past, Russia invaded and annexed Crimea in 2014. At that time, the United States and European countries expelled Russia from G-8, the association of the industrially advanced countries. After that, the meeting of only the G-7 has been held for the last seven years. International media are claiming that the United States and European countries are once again trying to get Russia expelled from G20 on similar lines. But as per international analysts, considering the differences among the G20 members over the Ukraine war, it will not be easy to boycott Russia from this organisation and the G20 cannot become G19.
