Washington/Moscow: Senior US official Victoria Nuland warned that Russia and President Vladimir Putin would have to pay a very dear price if President Putin orders a nuclear strike in Ukraine. Ukrainian leaders are consistently expressing fears of a Russian nuclear strike. Only last week, Russia tested its nuclear-capable Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Sarmat. President Putin had claimed after the test that this missile would dodge the most advanced air defence system. Roscosmos chief Dmitry Rogozin had said that the test of this missile was a warning for the United States and NATO. The issue of the Russian nuclear strike in Ukraine has come on the anvil, once again, following the test.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had alerted his nuclear forces within a few days of starting the Ukraine military mission. This order by Putin created a major stir on the international level. Although Russia denied the possibility of nuclear war after the warning, European countries, along with Ukraine, are raising the issue consistently. The western countries are warning that President Putin will order a nuclear strike as he has not achieved the desired success in Ukraine.

The statement of senior US official Nuland becomes noteworthy against this background. Nuland recorded her reaction regarding the possible nuclear strike in Ukraine during an interview with the Ukrainian website ‘European Pravda’. Nuland claimed that looking at the war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine, Putin could take the horrible decision of a nuclear strike.

Victoria Nuland warned that if Russia carries out a nuclear strike, the situation will change, and Russia, along with Putin, on a personal level, will have to pay a very dear price. At the same time, Nuland assured that however worse the situation becomes in the war, the United States and the other western countries will stand firm behind Ukraine.
