Ethiopian army airstrike kills 64; 33 missing and over 100 injured

Addis Ababa – The airstrike by the Ethiopian army towards the south of the Tigray region killed at least 64 people. These allegedly include the locals. Moreover, the photographs published show that women and children were also injured. Hence, the Ethiopian government has been entrapped; the US has demanded an inquiry into this attack. However, the Ethiopian army claims of having acted against the extremists in Tigray.

Moreover, the military has initiated airstrikes on the extremists in Tigray, who dismissed the appeal of Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed. Ethiopian Army spokesperson Colonel Getnet Adane said that the army only targeted the extremists, who pose a threat to national security and their bases. The Colonel is trying to convey that the action was not against the civilians in Tigray.

But, the airstrike carried out by the Ethiopian army on Tuesday targeted the residential area in Togoga city, said two of the injured people in the strike. This Ethiopian airstrike killed 64 people, displaced 33 and injured over 100 civilians. This airstrike in Tigray is the deadliest attack of the Ethiopian army in the last few months.

Thus, the Ethiopian government and PM Abiy Ahmed are being severely criticised for it. The US State Department has demanded an enquiry into the attack.

But, since the last two years, the tension between the military and extremists has increased since PM Abiy Ahmed reigned. A few months ago, PM Ahmed had given a solid warning to extremists in Tigray. But, when the extremists dismissed the warning, the Ethiopian army started the attack.

Meanwhile, a few days ago, a US senior official warned that terrorism has sparked ablaze in Africa. The United States expressed concerns that the terror has sparked in Africa, ranging from the Sahel region to Africa’s Horn. Ethiopia is also a part of the Horn of Africa.
