Outwardly strong China is inwardly weak: Former UK diplomat Roger Garside

Tokyo: – Even though China appears strong on the surface, in reality, the country is hollow and weak from the inside. Internal problems pose a serious threat to the Chinese communist regime. For this very reason, President Xi Jinping is spending more on internal security than the military. Former  UK diplomat and renowned author Roger Garside inferred that President Jinping has become insecure given these internal enemies.

Moreover, the second term of President Jinping’s tenure is coming to an end. Consequently, he is preparing to continue for the third successive term. Rules have been amended for this purpose and Jinping’s opponents are highly disgruntled. There are severe differences regarding this even within the communist party. Garside claimed that some displeased influential leaders from the communist party could rebel against President Jinping. Roger Garside, who has worked as the UK Ambassador to China, is considered an expert on China. Therefore, his inferences have gained importance.

Furthermore, Garside claimed while speaking to a Japanese daily, ‘The current communist regime is in a critical state. There is no option for a revamp of the system. Democracy can be the only alternative for this.’ President Jinping’s feeling in taking China on a dangerous path is becoming stronger in the prominent leaders of the communist party. Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang also feels concerned regarding Jinping‘s policies. Keqiang and the other leaders of the communist party are grappled with the fear that their future will also be at stake because of Jinping.

Garside noted ‘With the economic progress achieved by China, the influence of the private sector has increased to an extent and the sector also has gained certain power. The private sector is trying to use this to influence the policies of the Chinese communist party.’ Garside also pointed out that some big private companies can use their money against President Jinping and support the opponents of Jinping to start a rebellion.

Meanwhile, reports of significant differences in the communist party have been received even in the past. The displeasure expressed by certain Chinese leaders over the convergence of all the powers in the hands of President Jinping had become a topic of discussion on the international level.
