Biden administration warns India of serious and long-term consequences

Washington: India has disappointed the United States by refusing to go against Russia after the Ukraine war broke out. The United States has threatened that this will have serious and long-standing consequences. The Chief economic adviser to the US President, Brian Deez, issued this threat to India. Soon Two-Plus-Two talks are scheduled to start between the two countries. Hence, the warnings issued by the United States to India before this became significant. The United States seemingly threatened India that the bilateral cooperation could be developed only on US terms.

Biden administration warns India of serious and long-term consequencesAfter Russia attacked Ukraine, India adopted a non-aligned stand without taking any sides in the war. According to the United States, this Indian non-aligned stand is favouring Russia. During the Ukraine conflict, Russia offered fuel at concessional rates to India. Accordingly, India started purchasing fuel from Russia. Although the transaction does not fall within the purview of US sanctions, the United States objects to it. The United States has already warned that it will have serious consequences if India purchased fuel from Russia on a big scale.

Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Foreign Minister S Jaishankar have warned the United States that the fuel purchase from Russia will not be stopped. The Indian leadership also pointed out to the United States that India takes decisions based on national interests and its requirements. But this seems to have annoyed the Biden administration further. Brian Deez, Chief economic adviser to US President Joe Biden, issued a fresh threat to India.

Deez warned India that the decisions taken by India regarding Russia had disappointed the United States and there would be serious consequences and they would be long-term. A few days ago, White House spokeswoman Jane Psaki warned India on similar lines. But it has been exposed that the volume of fuel purchased by the United States, threatening India over the fuel purchase from Russia, is far more than the volume of an Indian fuel purchase from Russia. Russian media have exposed this information. But the United States’ European allies also are purchasing fuel on a large scale from Russia. These are pressure tactics of the Biden administration, which is warning India despite all this. The Biden administration has adopted an anti-India stand even in the past. Being fully aware that India will never go against Russia, the Biden administration is using pressure tactics to exert its anti-India policies. US analysts and former diplomats advise the Biden administration that it should stop targeting India, taking into account the traditional relations between India and Russia. All these people have pointed out that the United States stands to lose more than India in all this.
