Australia appeals to Solomon Islands to stop security pact with China  

Canberra/Beijing: – China has given sleepless nights to Australia and New Zealand by signing an agreement for a military base with the Solomon Islands. Australia, aware that the Chinese base here will cause instability in the region, has started moves to point this out urgently to the Solomon Islands. A senior Australian Minister appealed during his visit to Solomon Islands ‘Solomon Islands should remain a member of the transparent family of Pacific nations.’

Zed Seselja, Australian Minister for International Development and the Pacific Affairs, visited the Solomon Islands on Wednesday and met Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare. At this time, Seselja reminded of the cooperation between the Solomon Islands and Australia. Seselja pointed out that Australia has assisted worth nearly $120 million to the Solomon Islands in the current year.   

Seselja clarified while speaking to the media that Australia is an important partner of the Solomon Islands on the security front. He also reminded about Prime Minister Sogavare’s promise that using the Solomon Islands against Australia would not be allowed.   

The United States welcomed the visit of the Australian Minister to the Solomon Islands. The United States also has appealed that the Solomon Islands should not allow the country to be used as a Chinese military base. The United States has warned that China will become the owner of Solomon Islands with this military base.   

Whereas a strong reaction has been received from China over the visit of the Australian Minister to the Solomon Islands. Zhao Lijian, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, warned that Australia should respect the cooperation between China and Solomon Islands and should not interfere.   

China has increased its activities in East Timor, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands, which are three neighbouring countries of Australia. Australia is accusing that these Chinese activities are threatening the security, stability, and peace in the Indo-Pacific region.
