New Delhi: Report by the Central Government of India on the basis of the survey conducted by it, has revealed that almost 53 % kids in our country are victims of sexual harassment. To stop sexual harassment of children, strong legal provisions have been put in place. Inspite of the provisions it is quite shocking to see that the sexual harassment of the minors has continued. The Union Women and Child Development Ministry had conducted a survey in the year 2007, in the background of these atrocities against the minors. Union Minister of State for Home, Hansraj Ahir has informed Rajya Sabha that the survey featured 13 thousand children across 13 states.
Interviews were conducted of almost 53 % children. In these interviews children acknowledged the fact that they were sexually harassed. But they also admitted of not opening about this to anyone. These 53%, who were interviewed, shared information about the harassment they underwent. The children said that the harassment was mainly committed by the people familiar to them. According to Hansraj Ahir, children who are street dwellers and those who work are mainly the victims of these atrocities.
This survey about the sexual harassment of the minors was conducted in Assam, Mizoram, Goa, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Kerala.
