The United States and United Kingdom sign New Atlantic Charter

London/Washington – The United States and the United Kingdom concurred on the Atlantic Charter, strengthening the ties between the two countries. They say that even if it is a different world today, compared to 1941, the US and UK still believe in the same shared values. The new Atlantic Charter indicates the increasing scope of cooperation in the trade, defence, cybersecurity, climate change, Coronavirus pandemic, travel and technology sectors. The first Atlantic Charter was approved by the then UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the then US President Theodore Roosevelt during the second world war.

The G-7 summit starts in the United Kingdom from Friday; a bilateral meeting will be held between US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. High-level delegations from both countries also will be participating in the meeting scheduled for Thursday. Sources from both countries indicated that the Coronavirus pandemic and the rising Russian and Chinese threat would form two important issues on the agenda for the meeting. Atlantic Charter will also be an important issue during the meeting. US National Security advisor, Jake Sullivan, said that this would be an updated statement regarding the values believed by the free and open societies like the United States and United Kingdom.

The Atlantic Charter signed by the heads of state of the United States and the United Kingdom is considered the foundation of the Special Relationship between the two countries. It is said that the initiatives taken by the United States and the United Kingdom in the various international programs were a part of the implantation of the Atlantic Charter. Revival of the Atlantic Charter, against the background of the Coronavirus pandemic that originated from China and the havoc played by the pandemic around the globe, becomes significant.

In the last few years, increasing Chinese influence on international and Russian aggression is consistently coming on the anvil. The differences between the United States and the European countries over these issues also have repeatedly surfaced. But indications are that the United States and the European countries are coming together, once again, as the Chinese hand behind the Coronavirus pandemic is being exposed. The G-7 meeting in the United Kingdom becomes significant given this. Some people are claiming that this meeting will be against China. Analysts have expressed that signing the Atlantic Charter between the United States and the United Kingdom before the G-7 summit is a decisive development.
