US-Russia must avoid nuclear war: Former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev

Moscow: – Former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev appealed that the United States and Russia should take the initiative to impose more and more sanctions on nuclear weapons and prevent a nuclear war. US President Joe Biden conceded to extend the New Start Treaty with Russia. There are nearly 15,000 nuclear weapons globally, and it is said that more than 90% of these are with the United States and Russia.

It is necessary that everyone came together to find a solution to the nuclear weapons issue. No one can win a nuclear war, and it should never be started, was the proposal presented by Russia to the other nuclear countries. This started the process of reducing the number of nuclear weapons. 

Gorbachev advised that US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin should meet to discuss the issue of nuclear weapons. The former Russian President appealed that it has been proved by experience that meeting and discussing is important. Moreover, it is essential to stop a nuclear war under any circumstances. If this problem is to be avoided, it is impossible to solve it singularly; therefore, the meeting is important.’ Gorbachev also said that many things are possible if there is a will to reduce nuclear weapons and strengthen security.   

Two years ago, the former Russian President had warned of devastation while expressing strong concerns over the issue of nuclear weapons. Gorbachev warned during an interview, ‘Till various countries of the world have weapons of mass destruction, the threat of a global holocaust will always be real.’
