The Turkish Lira against the USD has declined to a record low. 11 Liras have to be spent for a USD and this is the most significant decline in the current year. This is having a direct impact on Turkish inflation. The inflation index in Turkey reached 20% in October. As per the surveys by international media, the Turkish population is faced with a lot of hardship due to this.

Amid all this, reports of the deteriorating health of President Erdogan also have surfaced. But Erdogan is not willing to relinquish his position. Over the last two years, President Erdogan transferred three governors of the Central Bank immediately. This action was taken for not following Erdogan’s orders. This has led to an increase in discontent against Erdogan and criticism is rife that Erdogan is responsible for the economic crisis in the country.

64% of the population believes that Erdogan cannot pull the country out of the economic crisis. A recent survey confirmed that the discontent in the Turkish population against Erdogan has increased compared to the surveys conducted in February and September.

The Turkish population is also expressing regret that the country has been included in the grey list of the Financial Action Task Force, only due to Erdogan’s mistakes. Instead of focussing on the Turkish economy, Erdogan engaged the country in the conflicts in Syria, Libya and Armenia-Azerbaijan. At the same time, it is also being criticised that he has spoiled the relations with countries like the United States, France, Israel, Greece, Cyprus, Russia, Egypt and others.

Moreover, support for former Turkish Prime Minister and opposition leader Ahmet Davutoglu is increasing with all this. Six opposition parties have united against the Justice and Development (AKP) party of Erdogan and demand for Erdogan’s resignation is being made. But the Turkish population is expressing a concern that Erdogan will not step down till the elections, scheduled to be held in 2023.
