Coronavirus cases in India surge past 10,000  

New Delhi: The number of COVID-19 deaths in the country has reached 354. On Tuesday, the number of cases went up by 1,463, taking the total number of infections over 10,815, in one single day. In the state of Maharashtra, the number of cases has risen to 2,684. Also, on Tuesday, 300 new cases were reported in the state, of which 242 cases were from Mumbai. While Mumbai became the hotspot for Coronavirus in the country, a mob comprising of thousands had gathered outside the Bandra station also on Tuesday. The Mumbai Police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.

On Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an extension to the lockdown till 3rd May. In his address, the Prime Minister stated that ‘Attention will be paid to strict implementation of the lockdown. The areas which have emerged as hotspots will be kept under a consistent vigil. The implementation of the lockdown at every village, police station, district and state will be meticulously monitored. For the areas that pass the acid test, and step out from the hotspot category, some of the stringent conditions of the lockdown will be relaxed in these parts after 20th April.’ Prime Minister Modi has also appealed to the people to follow seven principles to fight effects of COVID-19 such as taking care of the senior citizens, following the discipline of the lockdown and exercising social distancing, using masks and caring for the poor.   

The Prime Minister addressed the nation given the growing number of infections in the country due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Most states and experts have already issued instructions in this regard. Likewise, 11 states had announced an extension to the lockdown before his announcement. The number of cases in the country is rapidly increasing. On Tuesday, in a single day, 1,463 cases were recorded, taking the total number of Coronavirus cases over 10,815. Before the declaration of the lockdown on 24th March, India did not even feature in the list of first 50 countries in the world affected by the Novel Coronavirus, but now the country is among the top 23.  

Maharashtra saw a rise in the number of cases and has reported 2,684 cases. The cases reported from Delhi are 1,510, whereas Tamil Nadu recorded 1,173 cases, Rajasthan 879, Madhya Pradesh 750 and Uttar Pradesh 657. Other states have also reported a rise in the Coronavirus infections.  

Despite the growing numbers, people not following the rules for social distancing, and has become a more significant cause for concern. An incident rubbishing all the efforts for control of the pandemic took place in Mumbai on Tuesday. A crowd of nearly three to four thousand people had gathered outside the Bandra station. The mob comprised of migrant labourers, who had temporarily relocated to Mumbai for employment, and demanded to run trains to allow them to return to their native places. Some newspapers claimed that this mob had gathered due to rumours that outstation trains had started from the Bandra terminus. Nevertheless, the Police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.
