The West needs to warn China of serious consequences to ensure Taiwan

Taipei: The US and European countries have adopted a lenient stand against China. Like Russia attacked Ukraine, China can also attack Taiwan. Hence for Taiwan’s security, democratic governments should proactively impose economic sanctions against China to not repeat the mistake made in the case of Russia. Anders Rasmussen, former NATO chief, appealed to provide military training to Taiwanese soldiers to prepare for war against China.

Rasmussen was the chief of NATO from 2009 to 2014. He recently visited Taiwan, met President Tsai Ing-wen, and was assured of arranging for military assistance. He criticised the Western democratic countries for not being serious enough to take responsibility for the security of democratic Taiwan as it has always been under threat from Chinese invasion.

Rasmussen warned that if China attacks Taiwan, it will have global repercussions; hence countries with global interests need to ensure that the conflict does not escalate. The US should be a military ally for Taiwan, and other European and NATO countries should proactively impose economic sanctions on China. Rasmussen believes that the fear of sanctions will deter China from attacking Taiwan.

Meanwhile, the US Burke-class destroyer Chung-Hoon sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday. In 2023, a US destroyer patrolled an area near Taiwan for the first time, which was inspected by Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen. As usual, China expressed anger at the US destroyer’s patrolling.
